Introduction Population ageing is a common social problem that occurs in well-developed countries. Population ageing refers the age of a region increase and a shift of a country’s population towards an older age. In this research paper, the content will mainly focus on the problem of ageing population in Hong Kong, my hometown. Based on current fertility and mortality rates, if Hong Kong Government does not do anything about its ageing problem it will have a median age of 56.3 years by 2040, according to the United Nations (Kong). I would analyze the serious impacts of population ageing on Hong Kong’s economics and propose some useful solutions. Causes of Aging Population The reason why population ageing occurs consists of two major reasons; low or declining birth rate and longer life expectancy. 1. Low or Declining Birth Rate The statistics shows that the average birth rate is dropped from 11.3% to 7.9% in Hong Kong from 2008 to 2013 (Statista). The reason of low birth rate is because of the increasing cost of raising a child. A. The price of land and food is shooting through the roof. Therefore, the cost of bringing up a kid is huge. Based on the research result, the price of raising up a child in today would approximately be $5.5 million until the date of graduation.
